Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton starter Dominic Cancellieri retired the final 21 batters he faced to lift Creighton Baseball to a 2-0 win over Villanova on Friday, April 7.
The win moved the Bluejays to 14-10 on the season and 2-0 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova fell to 5-24 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Cancellieri earned his first win of the season (1-0), holding Villanova to one hit and one walk over eight innings. After walking a Wildcat hitter in the first and allowing a single to open the second inning, Cancellieri was flawless the rest of the way. The New Jersey native recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts, needing just 106 pitches. Bluejay closer Tommy Steier retired the only three hitters he faced to collect his third save of the season.
Villanova starter Cade Udell took the loss (0-4), allowing two runs on two hits and three walks in three innings of work.
Creighton took the lead with a run in the first as senior Andrew Meggs drew a one-out walk and sophomore Nolan Sailors blasted an RBI triple to left-center.
The Bluejays extended their lead to 2-0 with a pair of hit batters and an RBI single from senior Jack Grace.
Creighton wraps up its series with Villanova with an 11:00 a.m. contest on Saturday, April 8.
