Jena Lawrence and Natalia Puchino combine for the 27th no-hitter in program history since 1994.
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Senior Jena Lawrence and sophomore Natalia Puchino combined to toss the programs 27th no-hitter since 1994 as the Creighton softball team split a pair of game at the Texas State Tournament on Friday in San Marcos, Texas.
The Bluejays fell to Southern Illinois, 3-0, in the season opener as SIU's Maddia Groff fired a perfect game for the Salukis. Creighton responded with a 2-1 win over Northwestern State with Lawrence and Puchino striking out eight in the combined no-hitter.
Game 1 (Southern Illinois 3, Creighton 0)
Fresh into a new softball season, Southern Illinois wasted no time taking a 2-0 lead as the Salukis plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Rylie Hamilton and a sacrifice fly by Addi Baker.
Jackie Lis, a Preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, then added a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning to push the lead out to 3-0.
Groff would take over from there in the circle, retiring all 21 Bluejay batters in order to secure the program's first seven-inning perfect game. The Omaha, Neb. native recorded eight strikeouts while earning her first collegiate win.
Game 2 (Creighton 2, Northwestern State 1)
In game two Lawrence got the Bluejays off to fantastic start, firing three scoreless innings while allowing just one runner on base.
The Creighton offense responded to Lawrence's strong performance and plated their first run of the season in the bottom of the third to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead. Creighton used three straight singles from Sydra Seville, Cayla Nielsen and Lily West to load the bases, before scoring on a sacrifice fly to center from Madeline Vejvoda.
The Lady Demons answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth, leveling the score at 1-1. Taylor Williams and Laney Roos drew back-to-back walks to open the inning and later advanced to second and third on a wild pitch by Puchino before scoring on a sacrifice fly to left by Ashlyn Walker.
Creighton would regain the lead the following inning as Nielsen reached on a throwing error and came around to score on an RBI infield single by Vejvoda.
Puchino took care of business down the stretch, striking out six batters in the final three frames to secure her first win of the season and the Bluejays first combined no-hitter since Bryana Clark and Logan Black fired a no-hitter in a 11-0 run-rule victory over Grambling State on Feb. 25, 2018. It is also just the fourth combined no-hitter in program history since 1994.
The Bluejays return to the field tomorrow evening when they take on Texas State at 4:45 p.m., followed by a contest against UTSA at 7 p.m.
