Scouting the Bluejays
(2024: 26-7, 3-3 BIG EAST)
Creighton hit its first serious snag in the 2024 season as the Bluejays dropped a series at Xavier. Consider that statement as Creighton is 33 games into the 2024 season and for the first time the Bluejays dropped a series. Certainly there is work to be done, but the Bluejays have firmly placed themselves in the conversation for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
As a team the Bluejays are hitting .305, led individually by Nolan Clifford (.407) and Nolan Sailors (.384). Three other Bluejays enter the week with an average over .300 (Teddy Deters (.339), Tate Gillen (.319) and Colby Canales (.311). On the bump the Bluejays have a team ERA of 4.63.
Scouting the Huskers
(2024: 23-10, 6-3 BIG EAST)
Similar to the Bluejays, Nebraska dropped its first series of the season over the weekend as the Huskers went dropped a road set at Rutgers and went 1-3 last week. Bolstered by a stronger RPI, the Huskers are more than in the conversation for an at large bid. Nebraska is in position to make a run to host a regional.
Nebraska enters the week with an average of .290 as a team, led by regulars Cayden Brumbaugh (.341), Rhett Stokes (.325) and Josh Caron (.302).
On the mound the Huskers have a team ERA of 4.21 with 270 strikeouts in 295.1 innings.
Magic Number Is Four in 2024
Off to a 26-7 start Creighton is 25-1 in games the team has scored at least four runs. Another statistical anomaly is three of the
Bluejays' five losses have come by a 6-3 score. A few other statistical markers for the Bluejays.
Battle Between Huskers and Bluejays Is Always Close
Over the last 11 meetings, the Nebraska - Creighton outcome has been decided by three runs or less 10 times.
Bluejays Have Found Some Success at Haymarket Park
Creighton has won the last three games at Haymarket Park, including a 6-5 win last season. That game began in Lincoln on April 18, but inclement weather moved the final two plus innings to Omaha on May 9.
The teams resumed the contest in the bottom of the seventh. Nebraska had the bases load and no outs, taking the lead as Gabe Swansen delivered a sacrifice fly to score Max Anderson from third. Creighton, however, limited the damage to one run. The Bluejays responded with a pair of runs in the top half of the eighth on RBI doubles from Ben Gbur and Nolan Sailors to regain a 6-5 advantage.
Â
Malakai Vetock would keep the Huskers at bay the remained of the game to secure his second win of the season. The Elkhorn product tossed three innings of one hit scoreless ball to pick up the victory while Shay Schanaman suffered the loss after allowing two runs in the eighth inning.
Creighton's last loss in Lincoln came on April 4, 2017 in a 14-6 contest.
Teddy Deters Pushes Hit Streak to 18
Bluejay right fielder Teddy Deters took over the season lead by extending his current hit streak to 18 games. The last time he went without a hit came in the series opening game against San Francisco on March 15. Deters also has a 20 game reach base streak, taking over the current lead as Nolan Sailors' 30 game streak was snapped in the series finale at Xavier on Sunday, April 14.
