INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Despite a solid pitching performance, the Creighton Softball dropped a 1-0 decision at Butler on Friday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 25-19 overall and to 9-7 in BIG EAST play, while Butler improved to 20-23 on the year and 9-10 in league action with the win.
Bluejays starting pitcher sophomore Natalia Puchino allowed just one run on five hits and a walk during six innings of work but ended the game as the hard-luck loser. Creighton had three players with one hit each, as Lily West, Sydra Seville and Mikayla Chairez each recorded base knocks.
Butler put pressure on the Bluejays early, threatening to push across runs in each of the first two innings after placing runners in scoring position, but strong pitching from Puchino kept the Bulldogs from doing any sort of damage.
Locked into a scoreless pitcher's duel entering the sixth inning, Butler was able to score the lone run of the game on an RBI single from Makena Alexander after a sacrifice bunt from Paige Dorsett placed Ella White on second following her reaching on a hit-by-pitch.
Katie Petran recorded her 13th win of the season for the Bulldogs while striking out three in the complete-game shutout. Offensively, Cate Lehner and Alexander each recorded a pair of hits while White added one of her own.
The Bluejays and Bulldogs continue their three-game series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
