VILLANOVA, Pa. – For the second time in as many days the Creighton softball team suffered a heartbreaking walk-off loss to Villanova, falling 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon at the Villanova Softball Complex in Villanova, Pa.
The Bluejays moved to 1-4 in league play and to 11-1 overall, while the Wildcats improved to 3-2 in BIG EAST play and 11-13 overall with the victory. Saturday's contest was the fifth extra-inning game between the Bluejays and Wildcats, with Villanova holding a 3-2 record in those contests.
Similar to Friday's series opener, pitching dominated the early innings before Creighton plated a run in the top half of the fourth inning to take the first lead of the game. Sophomore Kaelan Schultz ignited the Bluejays with a bloop single to left, while a single from graduate Hannah Poole placed runners on first and second with one out. Junior Ella Dalton then delivered an RBI single back up the middle to give the Jays a 1-0 lead.
Villanova would answer with two runs in the bottom half of the frame to its first lead of the contest. The Wildcats used singles from Maranda Runco and Kelsey White, as well as a hit pitch from Brooklyn Ostrowski to load the bases, before a two-run RBI single through the left side of the infield from Ava Franz give Villanova a 2-1 lead.
Creighton immediately countered with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth to regain a 4-2 advantage. Senior Sydra Seville led off the frame with a single but was cut down at second as junior Lily West reached on a fielder's choice. Following a Wildcat fielding error that allowed Avery Barnard to reach base safely, sophomore Sydney Potter absolutely crushed her fourth home run of the season pushing Creighton back out in front 4-2.
Villanova, however, responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of singles from Ostrowski and Franz's to level the contest at 4-4.
The game would remain knotted at 4-4 through the next four and a half innings, before Franz's lifted a 3-2 offering over the centerfield walk to secure the 5-4 walk-off win for the Wildcats.
Seven different Bluejays recorded a hit in the contest, led by Seville with a career-high tying three hits, while Schultz, Poole and Dalton each collected two hits apiece. Kenzie Schopfer (0-4) suffered the hard-luck loss, allowing just one run on two hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Franz's guided the Villanova offense with three hits and four RBI while Kat Gallant earned her sixth win of the season pitching 5.0 scoreless innings of relief.
Creighton and Villanova will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Central from the Villanova Softball Complex.
