Omaha, Neb. -- Three crooked frames proved to be the difference as Creighton Baseball rallied for the second consecutive game to defeat Samford, taking the Saturday contest 11-8 in 10 innings on March 29.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 16-6 on the season, while Samford fell to 13-14.
Down 5-0 and still looking for the first hit of the game entering the top of the fifth, Creighton tagged Samford starter Cameron Keshock with four runs in the fifth. Freshman Nick Venteicher took the cap off the hit column to open the frame with a single to left-center. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Dakota Duffalo laced an RBI single through the right side to make it 5-1. The Bluejays inched closer via a passed ball, then Ben North liner a two-run single to left-center to pull Creighton within a run at 5-4.
The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Creighton went back to work in the seventh. This time Nolan Sailors was plunked to get things rolling, then North drilled a double to right-center. Nate McHugh followed with a two-run double down the left field line to make it 7-6. With two down in the frame, Venteicher delivered once more, blasting his first collegiate home run over the left field wall to give the Bluejays their first lead at 8-7.
Samford pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to knot the game at 8-8, where it remained into the top of the tenth.
The first extra frame proved to be the difference as pinch hitter Jack Torosian blasted his second career home run over the right field wall to provide the game-winning run. The Bluejays tacked on two insurance tallies as Teddy Deters, Sailors and North all singled with one down, then McHugh launched a deep sac fly to center to plate Sailors.
Matthew Aukerman earned the win (5-0) allowing just an unearned run in three innings of relief, while closer Garrett Langrell worked a flawless tenth for his fifth save of the season. Samford closer John Malone was the tough luck loser (1-2), getting tagged for three runs in his third inning of work.
The two squads are scheduled to complete their three-game series on Sunday, March 30 with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
