Baseball Posts 4-0 Shutout Win Over UC Davis

OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton starter Dominic Cancellieri made his return to the mound, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings as the Creighton Baseball team downed UC Davis 4-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday, March 9.
The win moved the Bluejays to 7-4 on the season, while the Aggies fell to 8-7 overall.
Cancellieri took the mound for the first time since suffering a season-ending arm injury last spring. The graduate student struck out four batters in 2.0 innings of scoreless ball. Senior Jimmy Burke then provided 2.2 scoreless frames to earn his first win of the season, while Shane Curtin and Garrett Landrell combined to allow two hits in the final 4.1 innings.
UC Davis starter Noel Valdez took the loss (1-1), allowing one run on one hit and two walks in four innings of work.
Creighton took the lead with a run in the first as junior Tate Gillen drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a balk and came around on a pair of productive outs, then final coming via an RBI groundout from senior Nolan Sailors.
After four scoreless innings, Sailors extended the Bluejays lead out to 2-0, blasting his first home run of the season out into the right field bleachers.
CU's lead quickly grew to 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh when Jack Torosian beat out an infield single, stole second and came around to score on an RBI single from sophomore Connor Capece. Following a walk to Nick Venteicher, Gillen delivered an RBI single up the middle to secure the Bluejays 4-0 victory.
Junior Nate McHugh led the Bluejays offensively with a pair of hits, while Sailors drove in a pair of Bluejay runs.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 11 at p.m. when they play host to Kansas State at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
