Omaha, Neb. -- Locked in a 3-3 battle Creighton Baseball denied UC Davis' bases loaded no out chance in the seventh, then plated six in the bottom half to take its home opener and first game of the doubleheader 9-3 on Sunday, March 9.
The win pushed Creighton to 6-4 on the season, while UC Davis fell to 8-6.
UC Davis struck first with a single run in the third, scoring on an RBI single from Korey Williams. Creighton starter Wilson Magers limited the damage with his second inning-ending double play in the first three frames.
Creighton answered with a run in the fourth as senior Nolan Sailors singled, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a foul out to right.
The Aggies went back in front by plating a pair in fifth as UC Davis put the first three men on and scored via a sacrifice fly from Alex Gouveia and an RBI ground out from Williams.
Once more the Bluejays pulled even with two runs in the sixth, getting consecutive singles from Matt Scherrman and Sailors followed by an RBI double by Will MacLean and an RBI grounder from Nate McHugh.
The game turned in the seventh as the Aggies loaded the bags without an out, but reliever Matt Aukerman induced a ground ball to third that cut down a runner at the plate and Creighton's third inning-ending double play on a ground ball to second.
Stopping the Aggies in the seventh gave Creighton all the momentum. The Bluejay offense loaded the bags in their half with three one-out singles from Ben North, Nick Venteicher and Tate Gillen. After a wild pitch gave Creighton a 4-3 lead, back-to-back walks pushed the game to 5-3. With two down and the bases still loaded, McHugh launched a grand slam to left field to put the game away.
Aukerman picked up the win (3-0) tossing 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, while UC Davis reliever Ned Frutchey took the loss (0-1) surrendering four runs on six hits in 2.1 frames.
Sailors and North paced the Bluejay offense with three hits each, while McHugh finished with five RBI.
The Bluejays and Aggies are back at it for the second game of the doubleheader at approximately 3:15 p.m. (CT).
