Omaha, Neb -- After a strong start by the Bluejays and a solo shot from Will MacLean, the Creighton Baseball squad dropped a 6-3 decision to Nebraska on Tuesday, April 15.
The midweek loss moved Creighton to 20-12Â overall and Nebraska climbed to 17-20 overall.Â
Creighton came out working in the first inning, wasting no time putting pressure on the Huskers. After pitcher Shea Wendt set the tone with a pair of strikeouts for three quick outs in the top. A base hit by Tate Gillen and a pitch straight into the back of Dakota Duffalo put runners on. Nolan Sailors ripped one down the line to plate Gillen, and a fly out from Ben North brought Duffalo in, giving the Bluejays an early 2-0 lead.Â
The Huskers managed to put a run on the board in the second on an RBI single from Joshua Overbeek. Then the Huskers' Dylan Carey doubled down the line, to drive in Max Buettenback to knot the game at 2-2 in the third before Jimmy Burke shut the door with two strikeouts to limit the Huskers from taking any more.Â
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Will MacLean delivered a solo shot out to right for his sixth home run of the season to put the Bluejays ahead 3-2 going into the fifth.Â
Nebraska responded in the fifth on a pair of hits and an error to tie the contest once more. The Huskers took the lead for good in the sixth with a triple by Case Sanderson, an RBI single by Brumbaugh and later a sacrifice fly from Dylan Carey. Nebraska extended its advantage to 6-3 in the eighth via an RBI double from Robby Bolin.Â
Anthony Unga took the loss (0-1) allowing two runs on two hits with no outs in the sixth. Nebraska's Pryce Bender collected the win (2-0) allowing just one run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work. Nebraska's Luke Brodrick nabbed his eighth save of the season by getting the final six outs.
