LINCOLN, Neb. – Playing in front of sellout crowd of 2,334, the Creighton softball team fell to No. 21 ranked Nebraska, 8-2, on Wednesday night at Bowlin Stadium in Lincoln, Neb.
Â
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 15-20 on the year, while Nebraska improved to 29-10 with the victory.
Â
Nebraska opened the scoring with two two-out runs to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first. A hit-by-pitch to Hannah Camenzind extended the frame before a blooper into shallow center from Kacie Hoffmann got away from the Bluejays, allowing Camenzind to race around the bases for the first run of the game. Emmerson Cope followed with an RBI single up the middle to give the Cornhuskers a 2-0 lead.
Â
NU quickly extended their lead in the bottom of the second as the first four Huskers recorded base hits. Ava Kuszak led off the frame with a double to left, before scoring on a single up the middle from Lauren Camenzind. Jordy Bahl followed with a single of her own up the middle before a three-run home run from Samantha Bland pushed the Nebraska's lead out to 6-0.
Â
The Bluejays threatened to push across a run in the top of third inning, loading the bases on three straight singles from Sydra Seville, Ashten Pierson and Lily West, but back-to-back strikeouts from Bahl kept the Jays scoreless.
Â
Creighton, however, answered in the top of the fifth inning as West launched her third home run of the season off the scoreboard in left to put the Bluejays on the board.
Â
Nebraska responded quickly in the bottom half of the frame with back-to-back home runs from Ava Bredwell and Kuszak to open up an 8-1 lead for the Cornhuskers.
Â
In their final at-bat, West recorded her third hit of the game, leadoff the seventh with a triple off the right center field wall. West would come in to score two pitches later as Kaelan Schultz delivered an infield RBI single to make the score 8-2.
Â
West paced the Bluejays offense with three hits, falling a double shy of the first cycle in program history. Schultz collected two hits of her own, with Seville and Pierson chipping in one each. Freshman Abby Rusher suffered the loss, falling to 1-2 overall in her first collegiate start for the Bluejays.
Â
Bahl earned her 16th win of the season, striking out eight while allowing five hits and four walks in 6.0 innings of work. Hoffmann, Cope and Kuszak led the way offensively with a pair of hits, while Bland drove in three on a home run that set a new Nebraska program record for home runs.
