Wichita, Kan. -- Opening up a four-game road trip through Kansas and Ohio, the Bluejay Baseball team dropped a 7-3 decision on Tuesday, May 10.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 32-11 on the season, while Wichita State moved to 18-31.
Senior Brett Murray opened the scoring with a prodigious home run to left-center in the top of the second. The bomb was Murray's second long ball of the season, his first since the opening series of the season at Fresno State.
Creighton added to its lead in the top of the third as junior Daniel Woodrow led off with a double to left-center, moved to third via a sacrifice by junior Nicky Lopez and scored on an RBI groundout by senior Reagan Fowler.
Wichita State, however, scored the next seven runs to seize control of the game. The Shockers got two in the third off Bluejay starter Austin Stroschein to pull even, then scored single runs in the fourth and the sixth. The big inning, however, came in the seventh as Wichita State scored three runs on two hits and an error to push its lead to 7-2.
Seniors Harrison Crawford and Ryan Fitzgerald accounted for the final run of the game as Crawford opened the eighth with a triple and scored on a sac fly from Fitzgerald.
Freshman Ty Ramirez took the loss (0-1), allowing one run on one hit without retiring a batter in the fourth. Wichita State's Zach Lewis earned the win (2-8), holding the Bluejays scoreless for 3.1 innings.
Murray was the offensive star of the game for Creighton, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, an RBI and one run scored.
The Bluejays return to action on Friday, May 13 as Creighton opens a pivotal BIG EAST series at Xavier, first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm (CT).
