Bluejays Rally Late to Take Opening Game of Doubleheader, 7-3

Bethesda, Md. -- Trailing 3-1 in the first, the Creighton Baseball team settled to hold Georgetown scoreless the rest of the way. The Bluejays plated one run in the fifth, another in the seventh and put up four in the ninth for the 7-3 victory.
Creighton moved to 27-10 on the season and 7-3 in the BIG EAST conference with the win, while Georgetown fell to 17-28 overall and 5-5 in conference action.
The Bluejays got on the board first in the opening frame as junior Jake Holton reached second on an error, then raced in to score on an RBI single from junior Will Robertson.
The Hoyas responded in their half of the inning with three runs on four singles and an error. After the first batter was retired, Georgetown's Ryan Weisenberg reached on an error. Four consecutive Hoyas singles made it 3-1 with runners at first and second. Bluejay starter Mitch Ragan rebounded to induce a pair of shallow fly outs, holding the Hoyas to a 3-1 edge.
Ragan faced the minimum over the next three innings and took the game into the eighth, limiting Georgetown to three hits and one hit batter the rest of the way.
With Ragan providing time, the Creighton offense began to chip away with a run in the fifth and another in the seventh. Sophomore David Vilches factored in both of the Bluejay runs, opening the fifth with a double and scored via an RBI single from junior Parker Upton. His next trip to the plate in the seventh saw the Bluejay catcher hit by a pitch, take second on a balk. Vilches went to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Will Hanafan, then scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Ragan gave way to junior John Sakowski in the eight, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 7.1 innings. Sakowski fanned both Hoyas he faced in the eighth, bringing Creighton's offense back to the dish.
Facing Georgetown closer Jacob Grzenbinski the Bluejays wasted little time, with one down in the frame the bottom of the Bluejay order filled the bags on a walk to freshman Jared Wegner, Vilches was hit by a pitch for the second time, then Hanafan worked another walk. Junior Isaac Collins made the free passes hurt with a three-run triple to left-center, then scampered home on an errant throw.
Staked to a 7-3 edge, Sakowski set the Hoyas down quickly with a line out and two more on strikes to claim the win (4-0). Sakowski retired all five men he faced, getting four via the strikeout. Grzenbinski took the loss (1-2), allowing four runs on one hit, two walks and a hit batter.
Collins led the Creighton offense with a pair of hits and three RBI, while Vilches closed the day 1-for-2 with three runs scored.
The two teams are currently playing the second half of the scheduled doubleheader.
