Baseball Watches Opener at Kansas Slip Away Late, Falling 7-6 in 14 innings

Lawrence, Kan. -- The Creighton Baseball squad suffered an 8-7 loss in 14 innings in the series opener at Kansas on Friday, March 19.
The loss evened the Bluejays' record at 4-4, while Kansas moved to 9-6.
Leading 6-4 entering the ninth inning, Creighton closer John Sakowski was touched for a pair of runs to force extra innings. The senior right hander rebounded to shut Kansas down for four innings, but it wasn't enough.
Creighton took an early 2-0 lead in the opening frame as freshman Alan Roden smashed a two-run homer to right, plating junior Sterling Hayes who was hit by a pitch.
Kansas answered with a run in the first and two in the second to snatch a 3-2 edge.
Roden and Bluejay offense responded in the third behind an RBI single from Roden and a two-run double by senior Dax Roper to make it 5-3.
The Bluejays' final tally came in the fifth as senior Ryan Mantle smacked an RBI single up the middle.
Creighton reliever Ryan Cowdrey was tagged with the loss (0-1) allowed a walkoff home run to Skyler Messinger to open the 14th. Kansas reliever Daniel Hegarty nabbed the win (2-1) with three innings of scoreless relief.
Creighton and Kansas are back at it on Saturday, March 20 as the two sides play a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
