Scouting Montana (0-0-0)
The Grizzlies began a challenging non-conference schedule in Omaha on Thursday night, then host Portland on Sunday.
Montana closed the 2020 season with an impressive 9-2 record, the program's best season winning percentage. The Grizzlies opened their condensed spring schedule with seven straight victories on their way to winning the Big Sky Conference Northwest Division title with a 7-1-0 record.
Â
Montana won the Big Sky tournament title with a 2-1 overtime victory over Northern Colorado, claiming the automatic bid as the Big Sky Final with Northern Arizona was cancelled.
The season came to a close in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 18 South Carolina (1-0).
With four Big Sky championships over the last three seasons -- two regular season, two tournament -- the Grizzlies were picked second in the preseason coaches' poll.
Â
Montana collected four first-place votes, more than any other team, but came in behind Northern Arizona, which had two first-place votes.
Â
The Grizzlies return six starters and a dozen letterwinners from last year's team that went 9-2-0. Headlining the returners are a pair of seniors: two-time first-team All-Big Sky outside back Taylor Hansen, who was a United Soccer Coaches first-team All-West Region
selection in the spring, and forward Taylor Stoeger, the MVP of April's Big Sky tournament.
Scouting Creighton (0-0-0)
After reaching its first BIG EAST Tournament in 2020, Creighton returns 10 of 11 starters from last season. The heavy dose of experience helped the Bluejays earn a fifth-place prediction in the preseason BIG EAST Coaches Poll.
Leading the way for Creighton is the back line of sophomore goalkeeper Keelan Terrell as well as defenders Jordy Rothwell, Gabby Grimaldi and Peighton Steffen. On the offensive end it will be junior Ansley Atkinson and sophomore Aida Kardovic.
Kardovic led the Bluejays with nine points (four goals and one assist) in eight matches during 2020, earning All-BIG EAST First Team. Atkinson, meanwhile, delivered seven points (three goals and one assist) to earn All-BIG EAST Second Team. Both Atkinson and Kardovic collected more hardware as they were selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
