South Orange, N.J. -- After senior Tatum Rembao appeared to deliver the buzzer beating shot at the end of overtime, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Seton Hall 97-91 in double overtime on Sunday, February 20.
The win lifted Creighton to 20-7 on the season and 15-4 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall fell to 14-11 overall and 9-8 in conference action.
Trailing 84-83 with just six second remaining in the extra frame, the Bluejays missed a floater but senior Rachael Saunders grabbed the offensive rebound and knotted the game at 84-84 from the strip with 1.2 remaining. The Pirates used their final timeout, but were unable to inbound the ball from near their bench. The turnover gave Creighton an opportunity. Inbounding to Rembao she took one dribble and knocked in a half court heave that was initially ruled good.
Following a lengthy review, the shot was waived off to force double overtime. The sixth stanza of the game saw Seton Hall score first, getting a traditional three-point play from Lauren Park-Lane. Creighton quickly pulled even on a three-pointer from sophomore Emma Ronsiek.
Down 91-89 with 2:37 remaining, Creighton pulled even thanks to a driving layup from Saunders. Creighton locked down the Pirates over the final 157 seconds, not allowing another point. The defensive effort also allowed Creighton to ice the game from the free throw line, getting four free throws from Ronsiek and two by sophomore Molly Mogensen.
Back and forth in the early going, Creighton used a 7-0 burst to take an 18-12 lead with 3:30 to go in the opening quarter. Sophomore Morgan Maly got the run started with a three-ball from the right wing, then Ronsiek and Saunders each converted driving layups.
Holding a 24-18 edge heading into the second, Creighton saw Seton Hall use a 12-0 Pirate surge put the Bluejays in a 30-24 hole (5:52). Creighton responded with nine of the next 11 points, getting four free throws from Maly and five points from Ronsiek to reclaim the lead 33-32. Over the 2:44 of the first half the Bluejays got buckets from sophomores Lauren Jensen, Mogensen and another trey by Ronsiek to take a 40-37 advantage into the locker room at the half.
Seton Hall eased out in front early in the third quarter, pushing its lead to as much as five (61-56) with 1:19 left, but a jumper by Maly and two free throws from Mogensen sent the game to the fourth quarter with Seton Hall leading 61-60.
Mogensen put Creighton back in front on the opening possession of the fourth with a trifecta (63-61), yet Seton Hall rattled off 10 of the next 12 to seize a 71-65 edge with 6:14 left. Saunders rallied her troops with a pair of driving layups as the two teams battled back and forth.
