Late Rally Falls Short for Bluejay Baseball, Falling 11-7 to LMU

The loss dropped Creighton to 1-5 on the season, while LMU moved to 2-4-1.
Things went off the rails for the Bluejays in the second as Loyola Marymout plated five runs on just two hits. The inning began with a double from Patrick Stark. A stolen base and a wild pitch gave the Lions a 1-0 lead, but a hit batter and two walks loaded the bases for Diego Baqueiro with two down. The LMU third baseman took advantage with a grand slam to give the Lions a 5-0 edge.
The Creighton deficit grew to 10-1 entering the eighth inning, the Bluejays loaded the bags on consecutive singles by junior Andrew Meggs and sophomore Kyle Hess followed by a walk to sophomore Alan Roden. Freshman Brant Voth capitalized by blasting a three-run double off the center field wall. Voth scored later in the frame on an RBI ground out from junior Jared Wegner, bringing the Bluejays back into the game at 10-5.
Loyola Marymount added an insurance run in its half of the eighth, but the Creighton had one more blast in it.
Freshman Nolan Sailors opened the ninth with an infield single, then junior Jack Grace blasted a two-run home run to right-center. Meggs was hit by a pitch, but a double play and a deep fly out cut short the Bluejay rally.
Bluejay starter Cade Lommel took the loss (0-2), allowing six runs on three hits and three walks in 2.1 innings.
LMU starter Matt McClure picked up the win (1-1), limiting Creighton to one run on four hits over six innings.
Sailors guided the offense, closing the game 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Voth and Grace combined for five RBI.
The Bluejays and Lions will play the rubber game of the three-game set on Sunday, February 27 at 1:30 pm (CT).
