Bluejay Baseball Extends Winning Streak to Seven with 8-3 Win at Wichita State

Wichita, Kan. -- The Creighton Baseball pushed its win streak to seven games with a comeback 8-3 win over Wichita State on Saturday, March 26.
Creighton climbed to 10-6 following Saturday's contest, while Wichita State fell to 10-12.
The Bluejays took a 1-0 lead in the fourth frame as junior Jared Wegner blasted a solo home run to left field. Wichita State countered with a three-run home in the bottom half of the frame, capitalizing on a single and a walk. Garret Kocis connected on a shot to right-center to make it 3-1.
The game turned into Creighton's favor in the top of the sixth as the Bluejays plated four runs on three hits, two walks, a hit batter and two errors. Things began quickly for the Bluejays as Wegner reached on an error, then senior Chris Esposito singled to left and freshman Nolan Sailors loaded the bases with by getting hit by a pitch. Junior Jack Grace took full advantage with a two-run single to knot the game at 3-3.
With one out in the inning pinch-hitter Sterling Hayes gave Creighton back the lead with an RBI single to right and later sophomore Alan Roden worked a bases loaded walk to give Creighton a 5-3 edge.
The Bluejays tacked on an insurance run in the eighth thanks to an RBI double from junior Andrew Meggs, then plated two runs in the ninth.
Creighton reliever Tommy Lamb earned the win (1-1), tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Closer Tommy Steier picked up an unconventional save with three innings of scoreless relief.
Wichita State starter Payton Tolle took the loss (2-2), allowing five runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings.
Offensively the Bluejays got three hits from Sailors (3-for-4) and two by Nolan Clifford, including an RBI double in the ninth.
The Bluejays and Shockers wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, March 28 at 1:00 pm.
