Bluejays Move to 8-0 In BIG EAST action with the Win
Omaha, Neb. -- After jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings, Creighton Baseball eased to a 14-1 win over Seton Hall on Saturday, April 23.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 23-10 on the season and 8-0 in BIG EAST action, while Seton Hall fell to 10-28 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Creighton plated two runs on two hits and a walk in the first. Leadoff man Andrew Meggs opened the game with a double down the left field line, followed by a four-pitch walk to sophomore Kyle Hess. One out later junior Jared Wegner blasted an RBI double to center, then junior Jack Grace lifted a sacrifice fly to left.
The Bluejays pushed their lead to 7-0 in the second, scoring five runs on three hits and three walks. Sophomore Nolan Clifford pulled a single through the right side to open the frame, then with one down freshman Hogan Helligso singled to left. Three straight walks to Meggs, Hess and sophomore Alan Roden gave Creighton a 4-0 edge, then Wegner launched a three-run double to right-center to make it 7-0.
Creighton's offense added two runs in the fourth, four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, while Seton Hall got its run in the fifth via an RBI double from Devin Hack.
Bluejay starter Dominic Cancellieri earned the win, allowing one run on two hits and two walks in five innings to move to 4-1 on the season. Seton Hall starter Nick Payero took the loss (0-5), allowing seven runs on four hits and four walks in 1.1 frames.
Wegner closed the game with four hits (4-for-5) with seven RBI, while Meggs set a Charles Schwab FIeld Omaha record with five runs scored in the win.
One notable contribution from the bullpen was the first appearance of the season by junior Ryan Windham, who returned to the field from injury on Saturday afternoon. Windham allowed two hits in a scoreless frame.
The Bluejays and Pirates wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, April 24 with a 12:00 pm first pitch.
