6/1/2025 12:01:00 AM | Baseball
- Nolan Sailors enters Sunday with 249 career hits, one shy of becoming the seventh player in Creighton history to reach 250. CU's only player this century with 250 hits or more is former Major Leaguer Darin Ruf, who had 275 from 2006-09.
- Nolan Sailors went 0-for-4 on Saturday vs. Arkansas. He'll look to avoid back-to-back hitless games for just the second time all year (March 11 & 14) on Sunday. His average fell to .392 entering Sunday, meaning he'd need to go 3-for-3 to climb back to the .400 mark. Â CU's only hitter (min. 75 AB) to hit .400 since 2000 is Chris Gradoville (.403 in 2005 in 124 AB). CU's last player with more than 125 at bats to bat .400 for a full season is Chad McConnell (.400 in 1992).
- Teddy Deters reached base all three times yesterday (HBP, 1B, BB) and has now reached safely in 19 straight games. His season-high is 20. Deters was hitting .209 as recently as May 12th but has upped his average to .237 thanks to hitting 13-for-34 (.382) in the past nine games. For the year, Deters owns a .373 on-base percentage thanks to 35 walks and 10 HBP.
- Jack Torosian is 2-for-2 as a pinch-hitter at the Fayetteville Regional. He's now 8-for-15 as a pinch-hitter this season, the most by pinch-hits in one season by a Bluejay in the last 25 years.
- Jaxon Goldberg registered his first career hit in the ninth inning last night.
- Tate Gillen (3-5), Matt Scherrman (3-6) and Nolan Sailors (3-4) combined to go 9-for-15 with five runs in Friday's win vs. Kansas, but went a collective 1-for-12 with no runs in Saturday's setback to Arkansas. In two regular-season meetings against the Bison, that trio went 6-for-20 and scored twice.
- Tate Gillen enters Sunday with 99 career runs, while Kyle Hess owns 98 runs as a Bluejay.
- Creighton has won eight of Jack Pineau's nine starts this season, including the past six. Pineau is 3-0 with a 5.71 ERA entering Sunday in 34.2 innings of work spanning nine starts.
- Ian Koosman started both games vs. North Dakota State in April, throwing a combined 6.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out 10. Having thrown four innings of relief on Friday (42 pitches), Koosman's availability may be somewhat limited on Sunday.
- Four other Bluejay pitchers threw in both games against NDSU in April, Noah Klein (1.2 IP, 0 R), Jimmy Burke (3 IP, 1 ER) Shane Curtin (2.2 IP, 1 ER) and Shea Wendt (2.0 IP, 1 ER). Curtin and Wendt figure to be unavailable after each throwing three innings of relief vs. Arkansas last night.
- Creighton has made the Regional Finals in each of its last two NCAA Tournament appearances (2012, 2019), and can make it three in a row with a Sunday afternoon win over North Dakota State.
- North Dakota State qualified for the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning the Summit League Tournament, which was played in Omaha just five miles from the Creighton campus at Tal Anderson Field (the home of the Omaha Mavericks).
- Creighton and North Dakota State split a pair of midweek April meetings in Omaha this year.NDSU won 3-2 on April 8th before CU won the rematch two weeks later by a 5-2 count.
- The two Creighton/NDSU meetings this year have not had a home run by either side.
- Creighton is 22-3 all-time against North Dakota State and has won 21 of the past 22 meetings. Ed Servais is 20-1 against the Bison. The teams have never played in the NCAA Tournament.
- Ed Servias looks to extend his legendary career on Sunday. The outgoing skipper owns a 720-419-1 record in 22 years with Creighton and an overall mark of 902-501-2. His 720 victories are the second-most by any coach in the history of the Creighton Athletic Department, trailing only former softball coach Brent Vigness (819).
- Creighton is 19-23 all-time in 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 10-11 mark under Ed Servais.
- Creighton's 42 victories are its most since collecting 45 wins in 2011.
- Sunday is the 34th anniversary of Creighton's first College World Series win in program history, an 8-4 win over Clemson. CU went 2-2 at Rosenblatt Stadium that June in what remains the program's lone CWS appearance to date.
- Sunday is the sixth anniversary of Creighton's 4-1 elimination game win at Oregon State, as the Bluejays knocked out the defending CWS champs and ended the college career of Adley Rutschman.
- Creighton had won 15 straight games when not committing an error prior to last night vs. Arkansas. CU is 20-2 this year when playing error-free on defense.
- The five home runs issued last night were the most ever by CU in an NCAA Tournament game. The 12 walks tied a program-high during an NCAA Tourney contest. Shea Wendt's seven walks tied a program-record for walks by an individual in an NCAA Tourney game.
- Creighton is 7-4 against teams in the 2025 NCAA Tournament field this year, including a 1-1 record vs. North Dakota State.
- Creighton is 5-0 in neutral site games this year and 12-1 over the last three years on neutral fields.
- In five postseason games (BIG EAST or NCAA Tourney) the past two weeks, Creighton is 4-1 thanks to a potent offense that's hit .310 in that time. The good news is that the offense has a 17-3 advantage in doubles in that span. But playing in launching pads like Prasco Park and Baum-Walker Stadium have also seen CU allow 15 homers in those five games compared to 35 dingers in the first 52 games of the season.
- Creighton has won 23 straight games when owning a lead at any point, and also owns 20 come-from-behind wins this spring.
- Creighton has outscored opponents 37-5 in the sixth inning of its last 25 games, which includes its seven-run outburst vs. Kansas on Friday.
