The Bluejays closed the series at BYU with a 27-9, while BYU fell to 28-9.
Although Creighton seized a 2-0 lead in the first frame, the nightcap was far from a walk over. BYU answered with a solo home run of its own in the bottom of the first.
With two down in the top of the third, Creighton pushed its least back to two as junior Nicky Lopez and Fitzgerald were hit by pitches, then senior Reagan Fowler slashed an RBI single into left.
The two teams continued to trade blows throughout the game, BYU got a run in the fourth, then the Bluejays plated two in the sixth.Â
Lopez started Creighton's sixth inning rally with a single through the right side. Fitzgerald sacrificed him into scoring position, then Fowler singled through the left side to make it 4-2. Creighton's next batter, designated hitter Matt Gandy, ripped an RBI double to right-center to give the Bluejays a 5-2 edge.
BYU responded with a run in the sixth, then Creighton answered once more in the seventh. The Bluejays' run in the seventh was superbly executed as junior Kevin Connolly walked, stole second, took third on a grounder to the right side and scored on a safety squeeze off the bat of senior Will Bamesberger to make it 6-3. After BYU scratch the scoreboard for a run in the seventh, the Bluejays put the game away with two in the ninth on RBI doubles from Woodrow and Lopez to make it 8-4.
It wasn't just the Bluejay offense hitting on all cylinders as head coach Ed Servais mixed and matched the bullpen flawlessly.
Leading 5-2 in the sixth with the bases full of Cougars and one down, junior Austin Stroschein limited the damage to one run on a sacrifice fly.
Up 6-4 in the seventh with runners at first and second and with one down, sophomore Ethan DeCaster got the BYU cleanup hitter (Colton Shaver) and Eric Urray to end the frame.
In the eighth it was senior John Oltman coming on with the tying runs on second and third to retire leadoff man Brennon Lund to keep it a 6-4 contest.
Starter Keith Rogalla earned the win (4-2) for the Bluejays, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks in 5.1 innings. Jordan Wood (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks in three innings.
Offensively Creighton got a combined eight hits from the top four in the lineup, two each from Woodrow, Lopez, Fitzgerald and Fowler.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday as the Bluejays battle Nebraska at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. Creighton will be playing in its home park, yet will be the visiting team in the Nebraska Classic sponsored by First National Bank.
