OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball fell into an early 6-0 hole and couldn't recover on Tuesday night in a 6-5 loss to No. 19 Nebraska before 4,197 fans at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
Creighton, which had won six of its past seven home games, fell to 13-13 with the loss. Nebraska won its seventh consecutive game to improve to 23-6 on the year. Nebraska had lost each of the previous eight games against Creighton decided by one run dating to a pair of 7-6 victories in 2015.
The Cornhuskers scored three unearned runs in the second inning, then added one run each in the third, fifth and sixth frames to build their lead.
Â
Creighton's best early opportunity came in the fourth inning when it loaded the bases, only to fly out to end the threat, as Husker starter Gavin Blachowicz threw four shutout innings of two-hit ball.
Nebraska reliever Caleb Clark threw a scoreless fifth, then allowed the first four Bluejays to reach in the sixth inning to end his night. Nick Bowron started the rally with a walk, Teddy Deters was hit by a pitch, and Ben North earned a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Nate McHugh then plated Bowron and Deters with a double to the gap in left-center to make it 6-2. Two outs later Chris Baillargeon doubled into the left field corner to score McHugh and Connor Capece, who had reached via a one-out fielders choice. Rocco Gump brought home Baillargeon with a sharp hit single to right to make it a one-run game.
JT Adams came up with a big shutdown inning in the top of the seventh inning after Creighton's outburst, as he pitched out of a jam after the first two Nebraska batters reached, but CU could not capitalize on the momentum as Husker hurlers retired the next six hitters. CU's last chance in the ninth started in promising fashion when second baseman Rhett Stokes bobbled a slow roller that allowed Gump to reach. Gump stole second base to move into scoring position.but would be stranded there as North flied out to center with the winning run on first.
Blachowicz improved to 3-1 with the victory and J'Shawn Unger picked up his team-high fourth save after throwing the final two innings.
Bluejay starter Ian Koosman (0-3) was charged with the loss even though all three runs he allowed were unearned. CU's McHugh had three hits and Baillargeon had two hits, with both men driving in a pair.
Creighton opens BIG EAST play on Thursday at 5:05 p.m. Central with a game at preseason league favorite Connecticut (15-15, 2-1 BIG EAST).
