Jays score seven runs with two outs in the ninth
MURRAY, Ky. -- Creighton Baseball scored seven runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning for a thrilling come-from-behind 10-5 victory at Murray State on Sunday. The win was Creighton's sixth straight and completed a series sweep of the Racers.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 6-3 on the season, while Murrary State dropped to 5-7.
Senior Matt Gandy scored twice and was 3-for-4, including a bases-loaded double in the ninth inning that gave Creighton an 8-5 lead, while Reagan Fowler was 2-for-5 and preceded Gandy's heroics with a run-scoring double that tied the game in the ninth.
Creighton trailed 5-2 heading to the eighth inning as the Races turned to closer Cody Maerz, who had led the team in saves in 2014 and 2015 and hadn't allowed a run in three previous appearances this spring. Maerz (1-1) had an outing to forget, surrendering eight hits and eight runs (six earned) along with three walks and three wild pitches in the final two innings
Ryan Fitzgerald started the Bluejays' eighth inning with a single and moved to second on a throwing error, one of four MSU miscues on the day. He would score on a single up the middle by Gandy to close the gap to 5-3 heading to the ninth.
Maerz started the ninth inning with a strikeout before an infield single from Daniel Woodrow and walk to Nicky Lopez started the rally. After a flyout moved Woodrow to third, Creighton trimmed the deficit to 5-4 on a wild pitch that also moved Lopez to second. Fowler would then rip a full-count pitch into the right field corner to even the score. Walks to Harrison Crawford and Brett Murray loaded the bases before Gandy doubled to left-center to clear the bases with the go-ahed runs. Brennan Hammer followed with a single to plate Gandy and make it 9-5, and pinch-runner Will Bamesberger later scored CU's final run on an RBI single from Riley Landuyt.
Sam Norman (2-0) got the win in relief, striking out the only man he faced to end the eighth inning. He was one of seven Bluejay hurlers in the game. Keith Rogalla started the game and allowed four runs in 2.2 innings before giving way to Jeff Albrecht. Albrecht allowed a hit to the first man he faced, but the CU bullpen would respond by not allowing a hit in the final 6.1 innings. Austin Stroschein made his Bluejay debut on the mound in the ninth, retiring the side in order on 12 pitches to nail down the victory.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday at 3:00 pm with a game in Lawrence, Kan., at Kansas.
